Automotive Interiors
Environmental problems stemming from the incineration of automotive interiors have prompted Toyota et al. to explore alternatives to glass fiber in their sheet moulding compounds. Blends of low cost carbon fiber and olefins in SMC's and needled fabrics are now being used in a number of models.
MTLS utilizes these fibers on its high throughput airlaid lines in an effort to keep costs down and quality high for its automotive customers.
Personal Protective Equipment
The high LOI and unique thermal properties of partially carbonized acrylics make for an excellent alternative to aramids in liners for turnout gear and other PPE.
MTLS' products differ from oxidized polyacrylonitrile fibers (OPF) in that the majority of the cyanide intrinsic in CF is eliminated in our heat treatment process. Smoke and toxicity values (specifically HCN generation) are therefore remarkably better than any other "carbon" fabrics offered today.
Passive Fire Protection
Various nonwovens comprising
MTLS' carbonaceous fibers have successfully demonstrated AB30 and AB60 qualification in accordance with the US Navy's latest requirements for passive fire protection (MIL-PRF-XX389). The materials' ability to survive in high temperature environments is complemented by the acoustic performance, HS&E compliance and overall handleability of the system.
Burn Through Insulation
MTLS' fibers have repeatedly passed the FAA's latest requirements for burnthrough protection for commercial aircraft in the event of a pos-crash fuel fire. Felts and lofted batting alike meet or exceed industry's standards for flammability, thermal/acoustic performance and oil and water repellency.
